National Maritime Day 2025:

India celebrated National Maritime Day 2025 on April 5th to honor the efforts of its seafarers and recognize the importance of the maritime industry. This day marks the historic voyage of the first Indian merchant ship, SS Loyalty, which sailed from Mumbai to London in 1919. The day reminds us of how vital shipping and sea trade are to the nation’s economy and how much we rely on the people who work tirelessly at sea to keep goods moving and trade alive.

The theme for this year, “Our Ocean, Our Obligation, Our Opportunity,” focused on the need to protect our oceans while also making the most of what they offer. The ocean gives us jobs, food, and global connections, but it is also our duty to care for it. Events across the country, including seminars and awareness programs, highlighted the role of the maritime sector and honored seafarers for their service. The day encouraged everyone to see the ocean not just as a natural resource, but as a shared responsibility and a path to future growth.

International Relations:

In April 2025, China announced a 34% tariff on U.S. goods as a strong response to new trade restrictions placed by the United States. This move added fuel to the ongoing trade conflict between the two countries. Along with the tariffs, China also limited the export of rare earth materials—key components in tech products—and stopped importing some American farm goods like poultry and sorghum. China took these steps after the U.S. raised tariffs on Chinese products, saying it was due to concerns over national security and the production of illegal drugs like fentanyl.

These actions had a big impact on major American industries. Companies like Boeing faced rising costs, making their airplanes more expensive compared to competitors. Tech giants like Intel and Micron, which earn a lot from the Chinese market, also suffered. State Economy:

Tamil Nadu recorded a strong 9.69% economic growth rate in 2024-25, the highest it has seen in the last ten years. This made it the fastest-growing state in India for the year. The state's economy grew from ₹15.71 lakh crore to ₹17.23 lakh crore in just one year, showing how well it is performing. This growth was mainly driven by the services sector, which includes real estate, IT, trade, hotels, and communications. These areas saw double-digit growth, helping the overall economy move forward quickly.

The manufacturing and construction sectors also played a big role, growing by 8% and 10.6% respectively. However, the agriculture sector grew only slightly, and crop production actually went down by nearly 6%. On the other hand, livestock farming saw some improvement. Despite these ups and downs, Tamil Nadu's overall growth shows the result of strong planning and development. Experts believe that if the state keeps growing at this pace, it could become a $1 trillion economy by 2032-33, which would be a huge milestone.

Awards:
